Radiation Oncologist, Jeffrey A. Young, MD.
Dr. Young is a member of Spectrum Medical Group, the largest radiation oncology practice in the State of Maine. In this interview, he talks about the rewards of his specialty and working here at the Cancer Care Center of York County.
“As a radiation oncologist, I get to know my patients better than many doctors do – because their treatment typically extends over several weeks. It’s a real privilege to work with people and their families at that emotional depth, helping them through a challenging time. It’s a chance to give people hope and help, yet I always get back more than I give.”
“When I was a senior in college, I was particularly inspired by one of my professors – a physicist. I was initially drawn to oncology for the science of it, but as I’ve gotten older, the philosophical side of medicine and interacting with patients has become even more important to me. I have a particular interest in childhood cancers; getting children well enough to go to college is particularly rewarding.
“A successful day is one where I feel I’ve given patients the time, attention and research they deserve. Thanks to today’s information networks, I regularly access the latest research and treatment approaches from leading cancer centers throughout the country. I can consult with specialists throughout the US as well as with my colleagues throughout Maine. Every radiation oncologist in Spectrum Medical Group is Board Certified, and we’re all connected electronically, so every patient gets the benefit of our combined expertise. We encourage participation in clinical trials.
“Everyone who tours the Cancer Care Center of York County is impressed with our advanced capabilities. Except for implant procedures, we have everything you’ll find at a tertiary cancer treatment center, including the ability to complete patient care plans with an advanced sophisticated computerized treatment simulator and 3 dimensional dosimetry.
“Many of our patients come to the Center for both radiation therapy and chemotherapy. I confer constantly with folks on the medical oncology side about patient treatment plans, to ensure that each patient’s medical, emotional and homecare needs are addressed.” |
