ARUNDEL, ME
I finished my treatment for liver cancer last May, and I’m cancer free as of my last visit.
I hate going to the doctor, and typically wait until the problem is significant. Excruciating abdominal pain drove me to my primary care provider in November of 05. A series of tests revealed that I had liver cancer, and I was referred me to a specialist at a top hospital in Boston. The cancer had spread to the lymph nodes around my aorta, and most of the doctors told me that nothing could be done.
Fortunately, I found a surgeon willing to give it a shot. He took out 60% of my liver and then referred me to his colleague, Sarah Thurman, MD, one of radiation oncologists at the Cancer Care Center of York County. Everything went so fast.
Nothing is sad here; it’s a happy place, and it’s beautiful. All the nurses and technicians are wonderful; it takes a special person to do this work. The beauty of the place does make a difference.
This was a life-changing experience. I feel that I was given the gift of this center. To have people as brilliant as Dr. Deisler and Dr. Young take care of me in Maine was a gift. I can’t imagine what it would have been like if I had had to go to Boston for my treatment. The Cancer Care Center of York County is a great support place, a happy place.
In Boston I knew I was a number. Here I knew I was a person.
