State-of-the-art Cancer Care Center
Opens in York County
March 2, 2006
SANFORD – The road to recovery from cancer
just got a lot shorter. With the official opening of The Cancer
Care
Center of York County (CCCYC) just off Rt. 109 in Sanford,
cancer patients in York County now have state-of-the-art cancer
care available much closer to home. In fact, the Cancer Care
Center of York County will, on average, save area cancer patients
about 25 miles per trip for radiation therapy treatments- and
some patients will be spared as much as 100 miles per day for
this critical cancer care. Previously, radiation therapy required
daily trips to Scarborough or New Hampshire. The Cancer Care Center of York County is a community resource
provided through a collaboration between Maine Medical Center,
Goodall Hospital, and Southern Maine Medical Center. All cancer
patients are welcome to receive their care at the Cancer Care
Center of York County, even if their hospital or physician
is not affiliated with the Center.
York County’s newest cancer care facility offers medical
oncology and chemotherapy and radiation oncology, as well as
provides access to educational and complementary care services
such as massage therapy. All three hospitals supporting the
center are accredited by American College of Surgeons Commission
on Cancer, which means the cancer care and treatment plans
follow the same recommended and proven treatment protocols
given in Boston, New York, Houston, or other large accredited
cancer centers.
“When patients are diagnosed with cancer, they want
to be assured that they are receiving the very latest cancer
care treatments. The Cancer Care Center of York County offers
cutting edge technology and leading cancer specialists, all
housed in a uniquely soothing and supportive environment,” said
CCCYC Executive Director Dee Hopper as she greeted the crowd
of more than 250 community members at a ribbon cutting held
at the Center on March 2nd. “The very best cancer care
found in major metropolitan cancer centers across the nation
is now available right here in Sanford, close to home.”
Sanford businessman and Cancer Care Center of York County
Board Chair Bob Hardison, took the opportunity to thank the
three hospitals involved in the project for bringing care close
to home for hundreds of York County cancer patients. “Every
day in York County hundreds of people face the physical and
emotional challenges of cancer. Now, thanks to the vision and
leadership of Maine Medical Center, Goodall Hospital, and Southern
Maine Medical Center, cancer patients in York County will no
longer need to choose between the latest cancer treatments
and care that is close to work and home.” He added, “This
building sits on a foundation of collaboration that brings
a wealth of resources, depth of clinical excellence and full
range of treatment options to cancer patients in our community.
This is a building full of hope and life.”
The Cancer Care Center of York County features advanced cancer
treatments including:
- Siemens Oncor Linear Accelerator with dual x-ray
and electron capabilities
- CT-based 3D conformal radiation treatment planning
- Access to High Dose Rate Brachytherapy
-
The latest in chemotherapy treatments planned by northern New
England’s largest oncology group, the Maine Center
for Cancer Medicine, who also have offices in Portland,
Brunswick
and Biddeford.
In closing, Hopper commented “This
Center brings a wealth of resources to York County cancer patients
that allow us to respond to individual needs. We are part of
an integrated network of fully accredited cancer programs,
enabling us to provide patients the very best treatment options
and clinical trials and protocols available.” Hopper
also noted that the CCCYC was designed with privacy and patient
comfort in mind to enhance the healing process. The warm earth
tones, fieldstone fireplace and soothing views of a forest-like
landscape add peaceful touches for those on the road for recovery.
