Cancer Care Center of York County Receives Grant for Nutritional Support Program
The Maine Cancer Foundation has awarded a grant to the Cancer Care Center of York County to provide nutrition services to the Center’s patients. Through this grant, a licensed, registered dietician from Goodall Hospital will be available by appointment twice a month, providing nutritional assessment and counseling at no extra cost to patients being treated at the Cancer Care Center.
Good nutrition is particularly vital for cancer patients
When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, many facets of their day-to-day living situation suddenly change. Of primary importance is their nutrition. Not only is good nutrition important to maintaining body weight; it is also associated with how well the patient responds to treatment and their risk of therapy-related toxicity.
Good nutrition practices can help cancer patients maintain weight and the body’s nutrition stores, offer relief from symptoms and improve quality of life.
Patients need reliable information.
Magazine articles, books, Internet postings, family, and friends present cancer survivors with a wide range of options and choices about what to eat and how to exercise. Of particular concern to medical professionals is the promotion of supplements, herbal remedies and alternative treatments purported to improve the outcome of standard cancer therapy.
This barrage of information can be overwhelming and potentially harmful to the cancer patient. Information from a qualified health professional can help the patient make informed decisions about nutrition based on their individual needs and circumstances.
