LOCAL CANCER CENTER FEATURED IN NATIONAL MAGAZINE

 

August 2008 - The Cancer Care Center of York County has been selected for the 2008 Architectural Review Showcase issue of Healthcare Design magazine, to be published in September 2008. Designed by JSA, Inc, the state-of-the-art chemotherapy and radiation treatment center opened in 2006.

 

“A healing environment has a very real and positive impact on a patient’s health and well-being,” explains Executive Director Dee Hopper. “Our goal was to create a warm, welcoming, cheerful place where patients feel relaxed and cared for. Our patients tell us that we’ve accomplished that in this beautiful building,” she adds.

 

“We aimed to create a setting that would be comfortable and reassuring for people who are facing difficult circumstances,” says architect Todd Hanson, AIA, who leads JSA’s healthcare design studio. Throughout the Center, patients are surrounded by soothing colors and natural light. The infusion room offers both quiet corners and places in which patients can interact with others undergoing treatment. Additional features that contribute to a nurturing environment include a fireplace and vaulted ceilings. A healing garden is being planned.

 

The building was also designed to be welcoming to the general public. Several nonprofit groups hold meetings in the Center’s conference room, and the Center periodically hosts health lectures and screenings.

“We also encourage the public to visit cancer information library, which is located just off our lobby,” Ms. Hopper says. The library offers books and publications on a wide range of cancer topics, a computer with Internet access, and staff assistance finding the right resources.

 

The Cancer Care Center of York County is a collaboration of Maine Medical Center, Goodall Hospital and Southern Maine Medical Center. The Center is staffed by oncologists from Spectrum Medical Group and the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine.
